What a busy year -- 2008 certainly has been a year full of changes!
Our parent organization, APRA International, redesigned its logo and its website. The Maryland Chapter changed its logo to
match and updated its website too. If you haven’t dropped by for a few months, I’m inviting you to visit www.apramd.org
again.
The last newsletter was in February 2006. Much has changed since then. Heather Davis, our former Publicity Chair and
Editor, moved to Scotland and is doing some freelance research there. Our former President, Angel Terol, left research to
be a major gift officer and started a family. There have been some administrative changes as well, which can be found
under "Recent Changes."
The APRA-MD Twelfth Annual Conference, held in October 2007, was a success. If anyone wants to write a review of
that conference, or future conferences, we welcome your input. The APRA-MD team is getting ready for the next conference,
which will be held on March 31, 2009.
We still need volunteers to host the 2009 Virtual Seminars. The dates are February 6, March 6, May 1, July 10,
September 4, and November 6. Please email apramd@gmail.com if you can host.
Meet the APRA-MD Board Members for July 2008 - June 2010
President: Caitlin Rettaliata
Current Position: Senior Development Research Analyst
Employer: Johns Hopkins Institutions
Snapshot bio:
I took over the duties of President and Treasurer from my predecessor, Angel Terol, in May 2008. Born and raised in
Baltimore, I am currently a Senior Development Research Analyst at Johns Hopkins. I've been working in the Development
field since I graduated from Mount St. Mary's College in 2002, and delved into Prospect Research at the end of 2005. It is
definitely my favorite part of the Development world so far - I love being involved in the behind-the-scenes action! In
addition to my full-time job at Hopkins and my duties with APRA-MD, I am President of the Alumnae Association at my high
school, Notre Dame Prep. I love being as active as possible outside of my desk job, traveling (especially to the beach),
working on the house I bought last year, and spending lots of quality time with my yellow lab!
Vice President: Ann Coleman
Current Position Assistant Director, Development Research
Employer: Johns Hopkins Institutions
Snapshot bio:
Before becoming the Vice President of APRA-MD in July, I served as the Programming Chair for nearly two years. I was
Co-Chair of Programming for MARC at Bucknell in June 2008, and I will be the 2009 MARC Conference Chair. I have been an
Assistant Director at Johns Hopkins since 2005. Before joining Hopkins, I worked as a Research Officer at Loyola University
Maryland and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. I am a graduate of Edinboro University and have done graduate-level work
at Ohio University and Loyola University. I enjoy reading, traveling, spending time with my black lab/pit bull mix, Stella,
and hanging out in Hampden, where I live.
Membership: Betsy Burtner
Current Position: Development Researcher
Employer: University of Maryland, Baltimore
Snapshot bio:
I am the Membership Director for APRA-MD. I've found APRA and the entire development research community to be immensely
helpful over the years, especially when I was starting out. I am currently a Development Researcher for the University of
Maryland, Baltimore. I graduated from the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia (Go Dawgs!) with degrees in Political
Science and Sociology and moved to Baltimore about four years ago. I'm a member of the Citizen's Advisory Committee for the
Maryland Transit Administration and I love working downtown and near Lexington Market, especially with the Berger cookie
and Utz stands nearby!
Publicity: Nancy Cole
Current Position: Senior Development Research Analyst
Employer: Johns Hopkins Institutions
Snapshot bio:
This is my second time as head of Publicity for APRA-MD and my second time working for Hopkins. Thomas Wolfe was
wrong -- you can go home again! I’m a graduate of Towson (State) University and Johns Hopkins, a past President of
APRA-MD, and the creator and administrator of our website, www.apramd.org. In addition to volunteering with APRA-MD
(since 1995), I’m involved with my church, a Star Trek group, and the Humane Society of Baltimore County. My hobbies are
listening to music, reading, crocheting, genealogy, and playing with my dog.
Tips and Links
I use the WayBack Machine, a service that archives web pages, at the Internet Archive whenever I find a dead link that
hasn't been cached by Google. http://www.archive.org/index.php

I use www.boatinfoworld.com for finding out if my prospects own a boat or yacht. You can search by the prospects first
and last names. It lists the owner’s name, the boat’s name, its length and weight, which company built it and when,
and its use type (recreational or commercial).

Recent Changes
In addition to the new logo design and Board members, APRA-Maryland Chapter has changed its fiscal year. Instead of
renewing your dues in February, dues should be renewed in July. We changed the fiscal year to better accommodate our
members whose organizations follow the July-June fiscal year. You should start seeing dues reminders in late June. We hope
this change will make it easier to budget for your APRA-Maryland Chapter dues.
Just a Reminder - if you haven't sent in your dues for the 2008-09 year, please send it ASAP! Thank You! If you are not sure,
please email us and our Membership Chair will check our records and let you know your membership status.
Also, APRA-Maryland Chapter elections will take place in June as well. Since we try to be as eco-friendly as possible,
nominations will be accepted via email. All nominees will be listed on the Nomination page of our website. If you are
interested in serving as an officer or committee member, you can email us (apramd@gmail.com) at any time!.
